housetoxicThere is always something spooky about ghost towns, and Picher in Oklahoma definitely fits the bill.

Now the town is a post apocalyptic vision, and photographer Seph Lawless was able to reach a formerly limited place to take incredible imagery.

Picher was once a productive mining community that generated a large amount of zinc and lead;  and the mining continued until 1967.

Dangerous materials and contaminated water from over 14,000 mines have accumulated in the earth and, by  1996,  34 percent of the town’s youngsters had lead poisoning.

Picher might be an extraordinary case of industrial interests trumping environmental issues, but it is not too far removed from what is occurring right now in Flint, Michigan.
